Nitor - meaning to "shine, reflect, excel, grasp opportunity".
Nitor offers a unique learning environment for Year 10 boys disengaged with their learning or seeking a different challenge in order to prepare them for their final years of secondary school.
Through their learning in Nitor the boys are provided with the ability to consider what is most important to them and to question what it means, and takes, to be a good man.
A key feature of the program is building mutually positive, respectful relationships with their teachers and peers. Each year an extensive selection process is undertaken to form a group of 28 boys with a wide-ranging level of academic abilities and strengths. The boys do, however share a common goal - to become better students and better people.
The Nitor Humanities curriculum focuses on the geography and living history of Melbourne – the CBD, Fitzroy, Carlton, the Shrine of Remembrance and the Jewish Holocaust Centre. Through exploring these places on weekly field trips students learn through real world experience and engagement with the community.
An awareness of wider world is gained through fundraising for St Vincent de Paul, beyondblue and Mercy Hospice, allowing the boys an insight to those without the same opportunities as them.
Students also research the lives and qualities of ‘good men’, specifically Nelson Mandela, Oscar Schindler, Weary Dunlop, Muhammad Ali, Jim Stynes and Anh Do. The boys investigate the events which shaped our world - the Holocaust, Apartheid, the Civil Rights Movement, Migration to Australia and Refugees.
During Term 4, the Nitor class undertake a trip to Sydney to culminate their year of learning together.
